Westructure Timber Frame Homes

Acoustics and Insulation.

The mass of the wall construction, together with the separation and air cavity which helps to prevent the airborne transmission of sound, provides a very good level of sound insulation in modern homes.

Party wall construction

Don’t assume that only solid walls can guarantee you peace and quiet. In fact, in tests in 2003 for the establishment of ’Robust Details’ that can be used by any designer and house builder, the standard specification for timber frame party walls (Wall Specification TPW-1) performed the best out of any construction method......

“If all dwellings had sound insulation as good as that measured in party walls of timber frame homes, the problems of noise from neighbours would be greatly reduced.“

Dr. Smith of Napier University

Timber Frame Information:

Timber framed construction.

  1. Modern methods of timber frame construction were introduced into the UK in the 1960’s and are a fully accepted method of building. Buildings of up to six storeys are becoming quite widely used in England and Wales. As for any other form of construction, timber framed buildings must comply with the requirements of UK building legislation.

  2. Detailed guidance on timber frame construction is given in the TRADA book Timber frame construction. Additional guidance for buildings of four to seven storeys is given in the BRE/TRADA Technology publication, Multi-storey timber frame buildings – a design guide. A set of Timber Frame: Standard details for houses and flatsprovides details for houses up to 3 storeys tall requiring 30 minutes fire resistance and flats requiring 60 minutes fire resistance. For structural engineers Timber Frame Housing: UK Structural recommendations covers methods for the design and checking of timber frame buildings.

  4. The benefits of off-site prefabrication are becoming more widely recognised throughout the construction industry. For the designer, the timber frame method offers flexible planning, energy efficiency, economic use of materials and a wide range of external finishes. Compared with masonry construction, timber frame is more accurate and the lower overall dead weight of the structure, particularly if light cladding is used, may permit lighter foundations.
  5. For the contractor, timber framed construction reduces site work and allows fast completion, avoiding most of the drying out time necessary with masonry construction and reducing the remedial ‘snagging’ required.
  6. For the client and occupant of the house, the high level of insulation possible can reduce the cost of heating. Comfortable room temperatures are quickly reached and economically maintained when the heating is on. Dry construction means that decoration can be carried out soon after completion of the building without risk of cracking and deterioration of finishes.
Timber framed buildings are also easy to customise and extend.
